It also enables investigating interactions between transport networks and their topology. Recently it has been used to analyse socio-economic processes in urban, regional, and environmental planning. In the light of these advances, the aim of this paper is to present the results of the application of complex networks theory techniques to the characterisation of topological, traffic and spatial properties of commuters' systems in insular Italy. date: 2010 publication: International Journal of Sustainable Development volume: 13 number: 1/2 publisher: Inderscience pagerange: 185-199 id_number: 10.1504/IJSD.2010.035107 refereed: TRUE issn: 0960-1406 official_url: http://dx.doi.org/10.1504/IJSD.2010.035107 citation: De Montis, Andrea and Caschili, Simone and Chessa, Alessandro and Campagna, Michele Urban management in the face of complexity: commuting networks in insular Italy.
