In our framework, the Barabási–Albert model of network evolution is extended by assuming that link weights evolve according to a geometric Brownian motion. Our model is verified by means of simulations and real-world trade data. We show that the model correctly predicts the intensity and growth distribution of links, the size–variance relationship of the growth of link weights, the relationship between the degree and strength of nodes, and the scale-free structure of the network. date: 2010 date_type: published publication: New Journal of Physics volume: 12 number: 2 publisher: IOPscience pagerange: 023003 id_number: 10.1088/1367-2630/12/2/023003 refereed: TRUE issn: 1367-2630 official_url: http://dx.doi.org/10.1088/1367-2630/12/2/023003 citation: Riccaboni, Massimo and Schiavo, Stefano Structure and growth of weighted networks.
