On the Difficulty of Social Network Misinformation Classification via Propagation Features"^^ . "Given the huge impact that Online Social Networks (OSN)\r\nhad in the way people get informed and form their opinion,\r\nthey became an attractive playground for malicious entities\r\nthat want to spread misinformation, and leverage their effect.\r\nIn fact, misinformation easily spreads on OSN and is a huge\r\nthreat for modern society, possibly influencing also the outcome\r\nof elections, or even putting people’s life at risk (e.g.,\r\nspreading “anti-vaccines” misinformation). Therefore, it is\r\nof paramount importance for our society to have some sort\r\nof “validation” on information spreading through OSN. The\r\nneed for a wide-scale validation would greatly benefit from\r\nautomatic tools.\r\nIn this paper, we show that it is difficult to carry out an automatic\r\nclassification of misinformation considering only structural\r\nproperties of content propagation cascades. We focus on\r\nstructural properties, because they would be inherently dif-\r\nficult to be manipulated, with the the aim of circumventing\r\nclassification systems. To support our claim, we carry out an\r\nextensive evaluation on Facebook posts belonging to conspiracy\r\ntheories (as representative of misinformation), and scientific\r\nnews (representative of fact-checked content). Our\r\nfindings show that conspiracy content actually reverberates\r\nin a way which is hard to distinguish from the one scientific\r\ncontent does: for the classification mechanisms we investigated,\r\nclassification F1-score never exceeds 0.65 during content\r\npropagation stages, and is still less than 0.7 even after\r\npropagation is complete."^^ .
