We develop a simple theoretical model to analyze the determinants which affect the regional disparities of income growth. The two key elements of income dynamic are the working opportunities of a geographical area and the investment in education, which, according to our inter-temporal framework, are negatively correlated. We show that high working opportunities reduce the incentive to invest in education. These results are confirmed by the empirical analysis carried out using data provided by Bank of Italy.
