Abstract

The essay argues that the traditional view of modernist painting as anti-narrative is itself the result of the historical and historiographical narrative operation known as Modernism, which endowed the present moment with absolute value to the detriment of historical time. The essay explores alternative ideas of temporality (Bergson's, Nietzsche's and Heidegger's) contemporary with the development of early modernism in an attempt to contextualise the specific narrative strategies at work in avant-garde paintings, particularly those of Picasso.
